Orphans with their JCI kuyas and ates New Members give essence to Moving Forward theme CORDOVA, CEBU (1 Jan. 2011) – Giving life to the JCI tenet “Service to Humanity is the Best Work of Life”, members of JCI Cebu-Mactan Channel celebrated new beginnings of the New Year with orphan children in Cordova. Led by Local Organization President Eli T. Espina, members shared with them simple and yet meaningful tokens to celebrate the onset of the new year.
A total of sixty-two (62) children from the Albert Schweitzer Familienwerk Foundation Childrens Haven in Barangay Pilipog, Cordova Cebu, benefited the school bags sponsored by the M Lhuilier Pawnshops through the initiative of the Junior Chamber International Cebu-Mactan Channel on January 1, 2011. Dubbed “New Year sa Children’s Haven” - the even proved to be successful with the presence of 2011 Local Organization President Espina, VP for Operations Dexter Samolde, and the G Force batch members Malou Napata, Victor Recana III, Yuki Sy, Marnyl Aleria, Jay Carl Del Rosario and Rey Anthony Quiapo providing the needed manpower support and all of whom decided to make their New Year celebration a day to remember.
Entertainment and festivities The children were treated to a sumptuous lunch prepared by JCI Cebu-Mactan Channel members and enjoyed a day of entertainment with various dance presentations. In an interview with the BRIDGES News Team, Miss Eden Lambot, ASFFI in-House Social Worker thanked the Local Organization for initiating such an activity and extended an appeal to its members and everyone to help the shelter through donating used clothing, sacks of rice and other necessities for the kids as it was revealed that they barely have enough funds to sustain the operational needs of the foundation aimed at helping nurture orphan children. In response, Local Organization President Espina said in his speech during the program, that such an activity is the first but definitely not the last to create a relationship that will cultivate the local organization’s lasting support for the shelter.
An idea blossoming into a real program On the other hand, JCI member Malou Napata, Project Chairman of the “New Year at Children’s Haven” explained how she came up the idea of celebrating the New Year with the orphan children. For her, it would be very meaningful nice to start the New Year with an outreach activity aimed at especially aiding orphans that immediate attention and assistance. Furthermore, Napata added that what would make it even more meaningful was to hold it on a New Year’s Day where orphan children would feel all the more special as they would have a chance to feel what other children would feel, that is, to have a family to celebrate the holidays with. Moreover Napata also praised and expressed her gratitude to her family, especially her sister, who incidentally celebrated her birthday on that day and who had chosen to sponsor, together with JCI members Anthony Aguhar and Asam Aurita, the food and refreshments which the local organization shared with the children. The event was also covered and featured in Balitang Bisdak of GMA Channel 7 Cebu.
