IPP Emi reprises her role for Cebu City’s Sinulog Celebration 2009 President Emi Rose Parcon, despite being pregnant with her second child, fulfills her annual offering to the Sto. Niño, being a vital part of the Sinulog Celebration core group. CEBU CITY, Philippines (January 17, 2010) In what has become her annual offering to the Holy Child Sto. Niño, 2009 JCI Cebu-Mactan Channel President Emi Rose Parcon braved the jampacked streets and the enormous crowd, estimated to be 8 million strong, and reprised her role in the Sinulog Celebrations core group, heading the Time Management team for Cebu City Vice Mayor Michael Rama. Since the year 2002, Emi has been working in close coordination with the Sinulog Foundation, upon the request of Cebu City Vice Mayor Michael Rama, to ensure that the Sinulog Parade would finish on time based on the planning process by the Sinulog organizers. Calling her his eyes and ears as to the progress of the parade, VM Rama placed his trust and confidence in IPP Emi to manage the flow of the parade and iron out discrepancies and problems that may hinder or worse, would make the parade end earlier than what is the projected appropriate time for it to end, which could dampen the mood of the festival followers for the fireworks display that would follow.
Together with her husband, 2007 President Angelo Daniel Parcon and son Dain Angelo Parcon, Emi braved the long walks, brought about by the traffic stoppage and the crowds which virtually cleared the streets of any vehicle, just to fulfill her obligations in what has been dubbed as the Philippines’ biggest annual street celebration. “We all have our own little way of offering something for the Sto Niño, I consider this service as my own way of giving praise to him, to ensure that there wouldn’t be any earth-shaking problem that would happen when it comes to the penultimate day of the Sinulog festivities”, quips Emi who cherishes doing the voluntary work for the Sinulog Foundation and for her good friend and ally, Rama.
Angelo, who goes around the parade route to assist Emi in monitoring progress, relishes at having the opportunity to experience the festival in person on a yearly basis. “Despite the heat, despite the long walks, despite the fact that it will be very difficult to get home at the end of the day where the streets will still be impassable, nothing still beats the experience of being one with the celebration on the streets of Cebu”, he says.
