Championing Reading once more Read to Lead chooses Banilad Elementary School
CEBU CITY (December 12, 2009) – The award-winning Read to Lead Program, JCI Cebu-Mactan Channel’s two-time recipient of the Best Education for Peace Award of Junior Chamber International Philippines, continued its advocacy to spread the love of learning thru reading by giving away another set of children’s books to Banilad Elementary School in a program held at Robinsons Place Cebu in partnership with OMF Literature during its Bunch of Treats Event. It was indeed a fun-filled afternoon last December 12, 2009 at the Robinson’s Place Atrium as the JCI local organization and OMF joined efforts once again to spread cheers to the kids of Banilad Elementary School. A total of 30 kids from all levels, together with their respective advisers, led by their principal, Ms. Jeralyn O. Rico, attended the event to receive the books that were made possible through the support and sponsorship of Mr. Bunny Pages, owner of the Pages Holding, Inc, the holding company of established Cebuano brands Thirsty? Juices, Mooon Café Cebu and B.R.I.G.H.T. Academy.
They also bore witness as one of the stories, Look for a Star, was brought to life by the University of Southern Philippines Foundation Theater group. The author of the story, Ms. Grace Chong, expressed her appreciation to the interpretation afterwards and herself shared and read to the kids another story from her Oh, Mateo! Series: a book entitled Crying Children. Being very participative while Ms. Chong narrated to them the story, each child received themselves their very own copy of the book. Books that can be found in OMF Bookstores were also given away to those who joined in the trivia question-and-answer portion that followed the story-telling. In her speech, Ms. Rico, the school principal, was very thankful that the Read to Lead Program chose Banilad Elementary School as the project’s beneficiary for this year, the program’s third year since its inception. Mr.Pages or Bunny as he prefers to be called, was nonetheless very thankful for the chance to help Banilad Elementary School, which is incidentally a stone’s throw away from BRIGHT Academy, and expressed in his speech how important it is for him that children develop the love for reading. The afternoon affair ended with a fun pictorial and kids went home happy with their books and refreshments provided by McDonald’s. This year’s Read To Lead program was made possible through the efforts of project chair Rhea Luz Ibales and also showcased the talents of new member Michael Orio who was gracious enough to be the host of the afternoon program.
