Slumdog Learning

 Vol. 1, No. 07 * 13 April 2009

You might have found time to watch SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE. I did yesterday easter afternoon.

It is a fascinating story about a call center assistant, Jamal Malik, who joined the Indian version of the game show WHO WANTS TO BE A MILLIONAIRE and won 20M rupees (1INR = .97 PHP).

What is so amazing about this movie is that the questions that made him win 20M rupees had direct references to his experiences in life. All this done in the context of Jamal searching for his brother, Salim, and the love of his life, Latika. What are the odds of that happening?

This blog is not a film review though. I am here to share with you my insights from a trainers point of view. I picked up something very powerful. It is this: EXPERIENCE=RECALL.

SCAMMED:

My good intentions yield bad results

I fell prey to a scammer last Monday, March 23, 2009.  I wanted to buy a used iphone over ebay.ph and I saw this one i particularly wanted.

This is not my first time in internet purchasing.  But i let my excitement rule over this particular day.  I was reflecting the whole week whether or not I would share this experience with you.

Setting aside my bruised ego,  I decided I would.

Creating a Culture

Vol. 1, No. 8 * 19 March 2009

2009 President

I'm back.

For somebody who talks and writes a lot, I've been pretty quiet on this blog for two months now.  Part of it is not intentional.  I've been trying to focus more on ensuring that the outputs of our Strategic Planning last October and our Tactical Planning and Evaluation last January are implemented the best way we can.

But partly because, I never really want to write unless the message I want to convey is so strong, it somehow becomes an advocacy.

Many things have been going on and many things need to be thought of, no single message stands out for me to share at any given time.

Until now.

The Wow Factor

How would you gauge if a speaker is effective or boring?

I'd most likely use my feelings as one of the final gauges.  I find as many opportunities to isten to presentations and learn from as many presenters as I can.  I then go home and see what I can do to improve my presentations.

Some tips:

4 Mortal Sins of Recruitment

Vol. I, No. 05  *  13 March 2009

Have you not been successful in recruiting volunteers, and seem to hit a wall of apathy every time you make a sales pitch for JCI?

Are there populations you’d love to involve but who do not seem attracted to your organization?

For a movement to grow we need people who genuinely believe in that movement. Junior Chamber International keenly recognizes the huge potential of warm bodies to execute its myriad of programs.

In fact, “membership growth” has consistently been the single most-frequent clarion call by JCI World Presidents since 1983. And yet, for the past thirty years, it had seen its core base of members gradually decline from a high of more than a million regulars in 1976 to an alarming number of a little less than 200,000 in 2008.
